In April 2003, our firm was preselected to conduct a preliminary design study for the Academy of Literature and Culture of the Municipality of Kalamaria. Our proposal won 2nd place. The 3008.20 square meter building plot is located where Pontou and Aegaiou Streets intersect (municipality of Kalamaria). The superstructure comprises the ground floor and three upper floors. The basement was designed to include an entrance /foyer area, a book store as well as a lecture hall with ancillary areas. Similarly, the first floor comprises a foyer and a lecture hall accommodating 300 persons whilst the upper two floors comprise office areas and a library / reading hall. The building occupies in total 2,327 square meters. In terms of form, it grows in two main axes giving the sense – when viewed from the entrance - of a “Γ” shape building with orientation towards the intersection of Aegaiou and Pontou streets. This location provides adequate accessibility to the building, giving also the required sense of approachability and welcome. The outdoor area was created to give a sense of a functionality of a public square, adding to the building an outdoor multi-activity area. The building’s design is compact but also bears carefully designed openings and passageways (colonnade in the east wing). The varied materials used and the play on the recesses and protrusions break up the building’s volume and provide shade during the day. The design proposals as well as the careful positioning of the building result in an aesthetically and functionally ideal solution that meets the Academy’s needs.
