The American Farm School in Thessaloniki is a private, non-profitable institution with a more than 95-year long tradition in Agriculture, Stock Farming and Education in Greece. The facilities occupy almost 250 stremmas including cropland, administration buildings, classrooms, residence halls and agricultural facilities.

The need to construct a new boarding school arose from the core educational programs the school offers and growing reputation. The Stavros Niarchos foundation sponsored the design study and the construction of this modern boarding school.

The design study considered both the need for the accommodation of students and at the same time the school’s operating regulations. Thus, the new boarding school accommodates boys and girls in separate residence halls. The building was structured in two vertical axes crossing at the main entrance. The building comprises 52 rooms, each one housing two students, with their own bathroom, storage area, a supervisors’ office on all levels and two fire-escape stairways at each aisle. The boiler room, the washing machines, and the warehouses are in the basement. Ιn the south part of the building and in direct connection with the surrounding area (due to the relevant arrangement), the design study provided for a library / reading hall. The building satisfies all requirements for persons with disabilities.

From the very beginning of the project, the design study focused on those features that could improve the building’s bioclimatic profile. Therefore, its positioning and orientation were designed in that context: exterior fixed shutters were placed in the southwest side while the main entrance was built in a recess. The size and position of the rooms’ window and door frames were selected to ensure adequate lighting, appropriate insulation and the option for manually-powered ventilation. There is a provision for controlled ventilation at both stairways. The façade bears simple and minimal lines, whilst the semi-circular stairways stand out and demarcate the building. The effort to integrate the building within the framework of the rest of the school’s low buildings was successful despite its volume. To that end, it was equally important that we considered landscaping as well.

The major objective has always been to achieve integration of the building at all levels, which is proved by the fact it has so far been operating perfectly.
