The owners of a 4-stremma (4,000m²) building plot at Panorama, Thessaloniki (which contains three already built detached houses) with sloping above 10% decided to assign the construction of one more house that could meet their needs.

There were two challenges in this exercise: on the one hand where to place the building in the lot and on the other how to address the existing marvelous green landscape. The need to construct a driveway for the owners’ cars and a swimming pool added another piece to the ‘puzzle’. The solution was to design a building in a "L" shape that lies perpendicular to the main residence; this shape creates an inner yard with a pool and increased level of privacy. The duplex residence comprises one section of 6x13m on three levels and a second section of 6x10m on two levels. Each part can accommodate one young couple. The garden and the swimming pool are for common use by the residents of all three properties. Α third level on the smallest part of the duplex house was rejected since it would have reduced the amount of sunlight in the houses and the inner garden.

Moving from the access road towards the residence, it is not easy to immediately appreciate its size, with its 6m side facing the street and the open-air parking place. The residence unfolds however only when one stands in the middle of the garden. It features simple minimalistic lines and volumes. Thanks both to the careful selection of materials, whose colors blend with the environment, and to the large openings towards the garden, one can enjoy the blending of the building’s interiors with the exteriors, where high quality materials have been used. Horizontal and vertical meshes for coatings were chosen to break up the volume, ending in a game of shades and shadows on the building surface.

The sense of coziness that prevails inside is due to the oak floor installed on all levels. The interior of the first house, featuring an oxidized floating steel staircase, with the banister being replaced by three glass elements (3.80 x 1.35m), charmingly plays on aesthetics and functionality. On the other hand, ergonomics in spatial arrangement at all levels along with the technological equipment selected, allow for many creature comforts.

All the above comprised a well-designed ensemble for timeless and durable use and style.
